'Sea city' loses it poet laureate

One of Gloucester's most lyrical, passionate and pointed voices is now silent, with the passing of the city's poet laureate, Vincent Ferrini.

But it is this region's and the world's good fortune that his voice will remain in the volumes of poetry he leaves behind.

Ferrini, who died on Christmas Eve at the age of 94, was born and raised in Lynn. Nearly 60 years ago he moved to Gloucester where he and friend-rival Charles Olson helped put the city on the literary map.

Ferrini was an unabashed radical when it came to political, economic and social issues. But through that philosophy ran a moral code that his friend John Bell, the outgoing mayor, said made him "the conscience of Gloucester ... the one who asked us to think about who we are."

He was also transparent.

McCain Gets Schwarzenegger Nod

Mitt Romney, square off in 21 primaries and caucuses next week with more than 1,000 delegates at stake.

At a news conference, Schwarzenegger said McCain has the national security credentials to do the job, and is a ``crusader against wasteful spending.''

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani also attended the event, one day after he dropped out of the race and threw his support behind his longtime friend.

McCain is counting on both men - Schwarzenegger in California and Giuliani in New York - to help propel him to victory in the two biggest states holding primaries next week. Combined, they offer 271 delegates, more than a quarter of the 1,023 at stake in a Super Tuesday slew of primaries and caucuses.

Schwarzenegger delivered his endorsement after a tour of a solar-energy company.

Pakistan delays election decision

Jan. 01 - The election commission says holding parliamentary polls as scheduled on January 8 "looks impossible".

The commission's spokesman says it's looking likely that parliamentary elections will be postponed but a final decision won't be made for another day. The campaign was thrown into doubt by the last Thursday's (December 27) assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto and the violence that's followed.

Susan Flory reports.

In son's finest hour, father battles heroin

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- I hand Reuben Droughns a letter. It is from his heroin-addicted father, an inmate at Cook County Jail back in their hometown of Chicago, pleading that I personally deliver a message to his son. ``I haven't spoken to him in a long time,'' writes the elder Droughns, also named Reuben. ``I want (him) to know I think about him often and wish him well. I wish life had been different for us, that I could be or could have been more a part of his life.

``If you see him, please tell him his father loves him and would love it if he could could find a way to come and see him.''
