Report details beating at N.C. hospital, suggests funding cut

BUTNER, N.C. - Officials at the state mental hospital in Butner have about 10 days to make improvements based on a federal report that cites several instances of patient violence, including a patient who was hit while strapped to a bed.The report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services details problems found during a review of the facility. Investigators have suggested stripping the hospital of its federal money, which make up about 25 percent of the facility’s annual budget, for failing to prevent violence.Hospital officials will use the report to devise improvement plans and pass another review. The report did not name any patients or hospital workers. The report, released earlier this week, refers to a 51-year-old patient who was tied down for attacking a clerk. A health care technician described hearing sounds as if a patient was being hit with a hand, and the patient said she was hit on the head.A doctor who checked the woman soon after the incident found no obvious signs of head injury.

Buyers scarce as house prices fall for third month in a row

House prices fell for the third month in a row this month, dragging the annual rate of increase to its lowest level in more than two years, the Nationwide said yesterday, adding to the sense of gloom hanging over the housing market.

The lender said the average house price dipped 0.1% in January from December to £180,473. That followed a 0.4% drop in December and left prices 4.2% higher than January last year.

It said house prices were 0.3% down in the three months to January compared with the previous three months, a sharp reversal from the 0.9% increase in the three months to December.

"The weakening trend in house prices during the last three months is consistent with the loosening in housing market conditions that has become increasingly evident in the data," said Martin Gahbauer, Nationwide's senior economist.

Woman 'wanted to smash lover's wife' with bat

A MISTRESS who plotted with her lover to kill his wife told him she "just wanted it done", a court has heard.

Mirvat Sleiman, 30, of Meadow Heights in Melbourne, and Aaron Rolls, 40, from the Gold Coast suburb of Arundel, plotted to kill Patrizia Rolls by drowning her in the surf.

Both are charged with conspiracy to murder.

Police uncovered the plot while listening to taped conversations between Rolls and Sleiman over an unrelated investigation, Melbourne Magistrates Court was told during their filing hearing.

Detective senior constable Nathan Favre said Rolls was heard telling Sleiman of his plans to take his partner of 17 years for a romantic evening walk on Surfers Paradise beach, then drown her.

In another plan the couple discussed, Patrizia would appear to have had an accident when Rolls took her hiking.

McCain Gains Big Support in Final Four Match Up

John McCain's campaign, adding another prominent name to a growing roster of supporters who are lining up behind the GOP presidential frontrunner.

Schwarzenegger, R-Calif., praised McCain, R-Ariz., as an "extraordinary leader" who can work with both Republicans and Democrats, citing his work on behalf of the environment and in limiting "wasteful spending" in making his support for McCain's candidacy official.

"He is a great American hero and an extraordinary leader. This is why I am endorsing him to be our next president of the United States," Schwarzenegger said.

Schwarzenegger's endorsement comes a day after former mayor Rudolph Giuliani, R-N.Y., dropped his presidential bid and quickly endorsed McCain. Their support could be particularly important in the two most delegate-rich states to cast votes Feb.

Man drank himself to death - with water

A 35-year-old literally drank himself to death by guzzling too much water, an inquest revealed Thursday.

Shaun McNamara's body was discovered on the floor of his bathroom in London last September - his death originally attributed to a heart attack. A post-mortem, however, revealed the cause was swelling of the brain linked to rapid and excessive drinking of water.

"In 35 years as a pathologist, I have never come across such a case," said Dr. Ian Reed, who preformed the autopsy and testified at the inquest.

There have been recorded cases of marathon runners dying after drinking too much water after a race. When dangerous levels of water are consumed, it can dilute sodium in the body to potentially fatally low levels.

Some doctors do believe, however, that excessive consumption of water can be a sign of emotional problems, such as deep depression - examples of literally drowning one's sorrows.
